Appendicectomy is a surgical procedure to remove the appendix. Laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery is well suited for this procedure. The appendix can often be removed with several small incisions in the abdomen.
Acute appendicitis is the most common reason for appendicectomy. Other reasons, aside from a suspicion of acute appendicitis, include appendiceal mass and tumour of the appendix.
What Is The Appendix?
The appendix is located in the right lower abdomen, near the right hip. Shaped like a finger, it is a small pouch that extends from the caecum (the first part of the large intestine).
Why Remove The Appendix?
An infected and inflamed appendix can quite easily rupture. And when a ruptured (or Perforated) appendix leaks fluid into the abdomen, it can lead to Peritonitis, which can be life threatening.
If your appendix was not perforated (ruptured), you would leave hospital 1-2 days after surgery, provided there are no complications.
Pain is manageable with oral analgesics. You will be able to eat and drink normally.
If your appendix had been perforated, you would need to stay in hospital for longer, receiving intravenous antibiotics (via a drip).
Normal activities, including work, can generally be resumed 1 to 3 weeks after surgery. Longer if you do physical work (your doctor will advise).
As with other surgical procedures, appendicectomy has its risks. These include:
That said, the risks are minimal, considering that when it leads to peritonitis, appendicitis can be life threatening.
